AWMAC ONTARIO CHAPTER

News Update | April 2015

Message From the President

I am proud to have been elected as the new President of AWMAC Ontario.

When I joined the Board of Directors in 2011, I was introduced to a group of people who had an exceptional commitment to improving our Chapter and getting AWMAC recognized for its dedication to the Woodworking Industry.

The recession took its toll on all businesses including AWMAC, where our GIS revenue declined quite drastically compared to previous years.  With the economy now in much better shape and most millwork companies starting to get back to pre- recession days, we are now even more committed to getting our Association back to where it was and hopefully surpass that point.

We are providing Lunch & Learns to all sectors of the Design Community with great feedback and we are signing up new Design Authority members every month.

If we can continue to push for AWMAC standards and GIS to be included on Tender documents we will start to reap the benefits of being a member of a highly qualified organization.

As with most associations, I’m sure there are things that we could do better to promote and increase the return on our membership investment. I would love to hear any ideas that you may have to improve AWMAC.   My personal email is peter.g.awmac@gmail.com; please feel free to contact me with any input, ideas, recommendations, concerns or most importantly to offer your assistance at the group or Board level.

Thank you and good luck to you all for the year ahead.

EVENTS

With the warmer weather, we turn our thoughts to the Annual Golf Tournament to be held on June 16th at Piper's Heath (5501 Trafalgar Road in Hornby). A great opportunity to play some golf while networking with industry colleagues.  Sponsorship opportunities are available to promote your company to AWMAC members and their guests.  Click here to register.

The Saskatchewan Chapter will be hosting the 2015 AWMAC Convention at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon, SK on May 28 – 31, 2015.  Details can be found on the National AWMAC website.

The Ontario Chapter aims to educate architects and design authorities on the value of the Guarantee and Inspection Service (GIS) program and the updated Architectural Woodwork Standards Manual by hosting free Lunch and Learns.  You can get involved by:

•Booking a Lunch and Learn (for architects, spec writers, etc.)

•Volunteering to spread the message and present the Lunch and Learns and meet architects, specification writers and interior designers

•Sponsoring an event to gain visibility with these potential customers

The Chapter wishes to thank Wilsonart and Richelieu for their past sponsorships of Lunch and Learns.

These Lunch and Learns result in more GIS projects.  In 2014 there were 43 active projects and 11 closed with a GIS certificate being issued. The value of the projects was over $1.3 million.  Currently there are 30 active projects and 29 in tracking.

The Trends Event by Richelieu will be held June 4th at Richelieu Mississauga. The Chapter invites you to come visit our booth or attend our GIS seminar.

OTHER NEWS

Thank you to AWMAC member Pro-Ply Custom Plywood for their generous donation that enabled the association to donate 40 copies of the 2nd edition of Architectural Woodwork Standards to Conestoga College’s Woodworking Centre of Ontario.  They will be used as a teaching tool for students who will hopefully ensure the standards are adhered to by their future employers.

AWMAC’s philosophy is member engagement and at the 2014 AGM, the membership agreed to a mandatory $200 participation fee as part of our fees, in order to encourage membership attendance at association events.  The fee would be refunded after the member attended at least one event.  Ways to get involved include coming to the golf tournament or seminars, or hosting a Board meeting at your office/facility, or sponsoring an event (i.e. Lunch and Learn or golf tournament) or manning AWMAC’s booth at a trade show.   If you want to know how you can get involved, please contact the office.

The Chapter exhibited at the Toronto Wood Design Show held at the Metro Convention Centre on April 9 – 10th.  The show featured the newest trends, new products, and provided training sessions by experts on a variety of topics.  As well it was a venue to meet those in the design community in order to promote the Guarantee and Inspection Service.

Code of Conduct

As AWMAC members, it is expected that our performance sets the standard in all things woodworking.

This is what separates members from the general population and provides clients with the confidence to deal exclusively with AWMAC member firms.

Membership brings the responsibility to ensure that the highest levels of professionalism are maintained in both the products we provide, and the process in which it is provided.   This includes respecting our fellow members and the tender process we are all engaged in. If your firm is not specifically included as a prequalified bidder, please seek to rectify that through the proper channels (architect, client) instead of submitting an unsolicited tender to the general contractors.

We always want our clients to have assurance that our conduct is of the highest quality.
