At the end of November, AWMAC held an educational seminar on the Construction Lien Act which had 25 members turn out to hear Michael Swartz, Partner at WeirFoulds LLP, provide an overview of the complicated Act.  He suggested additional reading, "A Layman's Guide to Construction Liens in Ontario" which is offered by the Toronto Construction Association (416-499-4000).  Attendance at this informative event resulted in the refund of the $200 participation fee for several members.

On Wednesday, March 18th, there will be another seminar for the MSQ Manufacturer Standards Questionnaire review for the new AWS Manual Edition 2 which all Manufacturing members must write before October 2015.  Any project that was tendered after October 1st, 2014 must adhere to the new manual.  For GIS projects that were tendered after October 1st, 2014, all Manufacturing Members will have to have a Manager that has successfully passed the new MSQ test before a GIS Certificate can be issued.  To find out more about MSQ, click here. To register for the seminar, contact Hermia (416-499-4000 x182 or gis@awmacontario.com)

To pick up your free member copy of the manual or to provide suggestions for future seminars, contact gis@awmacontario.com

The Ontario Chapter is requiring all Manufacturer members to notify the office regarding any changes to your company's organization since joining the association to ensure its records are up to date.  If you implement any changes in ownership, legal company name, etc. you must let us know.

Please complete the attached information about your company.

Thanks to the generous support by Ontario Associate members Formica, Richelieu and Upper Canada Forest Products, 40 copies of the 2nd edition of the Architectural Woodwork Standards were provided to Georgian College. AWMAC's Vice President, Carlo DeFrancesco, presented the complimentary manuals to Lynn MacKinlay, Professor of Cabinetmaking Techniques, at the college who will start to integrate the manual standards into lessons starting this month.

AWMAC Ontario Chapter has revised its Constitution pending ratification by members at the upcoming February 6th AGM.  To review the draft, click here.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Al Kapusta on November 26, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 76.  Al was a co-founder of the millwork company Artek which merged with B.C. Millwork in 1987 to form one of the largest millwork manufacturing and interior contracting firms in Western Canada.  His favourite achievement was the design and construction of the animation desks for Walt Disney Animation.  AWMAC sends its respects to his wife Helga and their children.

AWMAC National is gathering content for the spring issue of The Sounding Board magazine.  Members can submit unique or interesting projects that would be of interest to not only other members, but also the design community.  A brief description of the project including name, location, architect or designer with photos should be sent to gis@awmacontario.com no later than January 23rd for consideration.
